7 Overhyped RV Products You DON’T Need: Save Money and Stress Less

Overhyped RV Gear

As full-time RVers, we're often bombarded with recommendations on products that we "absolutely need" to make RV life more comfortable or efficient. And let’s be honest, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we need every new gadget out there. But after five years on the road, we’ve learned that some of the most highly recommended RV products are either unnecessary or have cheaper alternatives that work just as well (if not better!).

Here at The Roaming Gomes, we’re all about keeping things simple and affordable. In this blog, we’ll give you a sneak peek into seven products that you don’t need to buy despite what other RVers or influencers might tell you. Plus, we’ll share some cost-effective alternatives that can save you hundreds of dollars over the long haul.

For the full breakdown and even more tips, make sure to watch our latest YouTube video linked at the end of this post!

1. Black Tank Treatments

Many RVers swear by black tank treatments, like those orange pods or powders you find at Walmart or Camping World. But, honestly, you don’t need them. We’ve been using a simple DIY formula from Kleen Tank, and it’s been a game changer for us. No odors, no issues—and it’s free! Check out our video for the full recipe.

2. RV Memberships

With so many RV membership options, like Escapees and Thousand Trails, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out if you don’t join one. But trust us, RV memberships aren’t for everyone. Before you invest in a membership, think about your travel style. Are you really going to stay in these campgrounds enough to justify the cost? We’ll explain more in our video, including when an RV membership might be worth it.

3. RV-Specific Toilet Paper

Yes, they sell RV-specific toilet paper at a premium, but it’s just marketing! What you really need is septic-safe toilet paper. We’ve been using Angel Soft for years with zero problems. Just do a simple test: put the toilet paper in water and see if it breaks down. If it does, you’re good to go. No need to overspend on “special” RV toilet paper.

4. Fancy Water Filter Systems

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you need an elaborate water filter system for your RV. A simple inline water filter from brands like CAMCO will do the job just fine. For drinking water, we use a Pure water filter pitcher, which works perfectly. There’s no need to overcomplicate things!

5. Disposable Rubber Gloves

When it comes to managing your black tank, many recommend using disposable rubber gloves. But why keep buying new gloves when you can invest in reusable ones? We bought a pair of heavy-duty gloves from Harbor Freight that work great. After use, just wash them, and you’re set for next time!

6. Snap Pads

Snap pads that attach to your leveling jacks are another overhyped product. They’re supposed to make leveling easier, but we’ve had success using regular leveling blocks for years. Plus, snap pads can fall off while driving, which adds more hassle.

7. TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System)

Everyone seems to think you must have a TPMS system for your RV, but we disagree. We’ve gotten by just fine with a high-quality tire pressure gauge and a reliable inflator. This setup has saved us hundreds of dollars while ensuring our tires are always in good condition.
