How We Started Our RV YouTube Channel: Tips for Aspiring RV Content Creators

Welcome back, Roamers! 🚐

As we celebrate our five-year anniversary of owning an RV, we’re reflecting on our journey that led us to create our YouTube channel, The Roaming Gomes. From selling everything in 2019 and hitting the road in our 2020 Keystone Bullet to upgrading to our 2022 Keystone Cougar, our adventure has been filled with both challenges and triumphs. Along the way, we decided to share our story with the world through YouTube.

Why We Started Our Channel

Our journey on YouTube didn’t start with the intention of becoming a major channel or making money. It all began in late 2019, after several months on the road, when we realized that we loved watching other RV channels. We thought, “Why not start one ourselves?” So, with little experience and a lot of enthusiasm, we launched our first channel, We Found Our Way.

To be honest, those early videos were rough. We had no idea what we were doing, and it showed! But that’s okay because starting something new is always a learning process. In fact, one of the biggest tips we can give to aspiring YouTubers is this: Don’t worry if your first videos aren’t perfect. Just start creating, and you’ll improve over time.

Finding Our Groove

Our first channel didn’t last. The pressure to keep up with other RV channels that seemed to be thriving on disaster stories and sensational content wasn’t what we wanted. So, we shut down We Found Our Way and took a break to rethink our approach.

It wasn’t until after a failed attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail and a brief stint with an outdoor channel that we decided to revisit the idea of an RV channel. This time, we wanted to focus on authenticity—sharing what full-time RV living is really like, without the drama or exaggeration.

That’s how The Roaming Gomes was born. The inspiration for the name came from a visit to our son’s house, where a bunch of gnomes (or "Gomes," as they called them) on the mantle sparked an idea. While our branding has evolved since then, the essence of our channel remains the same: showing the real, everyday life of two people living full-time in an RV.

Tips for New RV Content Creators

If you’re thinking about starting your own YouTube channel, here’s our advice:

  1. Be Authentic: Your viewers will appreciate your honesty. Don’t feel pressured to create drama or sensational content. Just be yourself.
  2. Consistency is Key: Establish a posting schedule and stick to it. Your audience will come to expect regular content, and consistency helps build your channel.
  3. Start with What You Have: You don’t need fancy equipment to get started. We film all our videos on a GoPro 9, and our microphones were budget-friendly. The most important thing is to just hit record.
  4. Don’t Give Up: There will be times when you feel discouraged, but remember why you started. Your perspective is unique, and there’s always someone out there who will connect with your story.
