RV Life When You Travel With Pets!

We have travelled with our three pets since day one of our full-time RV Life in August of 2019. Our two cats, Hazel & Onyx and our Chihuahua, Bucky are an integral part of our lives. However, there are special accommodations needed when you're travelling the country in an RV with three pets!

Of course, the first thing we needed to consider was how we were going to transport them from place to place. Our first tip and the one that cannot be ignored is that animals can NEVER be transported in a travel trailer or fifth wheel! Putting them in the trailer while moving is like putting them in a 3.5 earthquake! They have no idea what's happening and will be terrified. Additionally, you'd be opening them up to potential injury and even death if something in the trailer shifts and falls. Many people will only use plastic dishware because, during travel, there is a definite possibility that glass dishware will break. Your pets are just as, if not more, fragile.

What we do, because Cindy follows behind the trailer in her car, is have Bucky buckled in the passenger seat with a seat belt attached directly to his harness. The two cats travel in the back seat of my truck in a "show carrier" intended for two cats. The carrier occupies the entire back seat and even allows for us to put a small litter box in it.

The next thing was dealing with other pets, in strange places. Whenever you arrive at an RV Park, know ahead of time if there is a dog park or run and if it is separated into two areas for large and small dogs. With Bucky being only ten pounds, he needs and area where he is separated from larger dogs. When we were in South Carolina, this became evident when a particularly large black lab got through the gate and attacked him. Were it not for the fact that his harness came up on to his neck, and the dog could only grab that, Bucky could have been seriously injured. In that vein, also be sure your dog is comfortable around other dogs before taking them into any dog park. Also, be sure that the RV park maintains the dog park area. Were that the case in South Carolina, that lab would have never been able to get through the gate to begin with.

As far as having the animals inside your RV, you're going to have to get creative with litter box placement. We cut a hole in the fascia of the bench in the dinette, placed a decorative trim around it and placed the litter box under the dinette bench. Our litter box set up

In our previous unit, we had the litter box under the bed in the storage area there. It wasn't as nice of a look but it definitely worked for us.

Overall, with a little forethought and planning, it's easy to travel safely and easily with your fur babies in your RV!
